Course Description:

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is a leader among museums with modern art collections. Join us for a look at this world-class museum and its renowned collections. We’ll begin with a brief history of the venue itself, from its initial home inside the War Memorial Veterans Building to its current home designed by Mario Botta, made even more spectacular by a recent Snohetta addition. Next, we’ll explore the collections themselves. Works by Matisse, Cornell, Diebenkorn, Rauschenberg and more, as well as a number of strange, beautiful and challenging pieces that were not a part of previous collections. We’ll also examine the Fischer collection, which features modern masters like Alexander Calder, Sol LeWitt, Cy Twombly and Joan Mitchell, and the photography collection, which includes seminal images on the exploration and settling of the West.
