Course Description:

While no "songbook" exists, there are well over a hundred songs that Shakespeare seems to have known because he inserts them, quotes them, or alludes to them in his plays. Roughly half are ballads, while other categories include love songs, drinking songs, and rounds. Our course will sample Shakespeare's music from a host of plays, including "Romeo & Juliet," "Twelfth Night," "Othello," "Troilus & Cressida," "Midsummer Night's Dream" and others. We will explore the music's role through both visual and audio recordings. No previous Shakespeare experience required.
