Course Description:

For centuries, poets have found insight, wisdom and consolation in nature. Even in this century, with technological advances continuing to muffle the call of the outdoors, transformative discoveries through nature have inspired many of our best poets. In a two-part offering, Dr. Joseph Cotham explores the exquisite work of four contemporary American poets, each with strong ties to the natural world. The first session will examine the poetry of Mary Oliver and
Wendell Berry, with the second meeting featuring the works of Jane Hirshfield and Gary Snyder. A short biography of each poet will be presented followed by a group recitation and discussion of a selection of poems. By reading these works aloud, listening with a contemplative ear, and then sharing our wisdom, the poetry comes to life.
