Course Description:

I met the man once, at his home. It seemed to me that the door opened on Mt. Rushmore, as a granite-faced man of the West greeted us. For me, Wallace Stegner captures much of my West—Colorado to California— and this course will trace some of that territory as we read a few of his short stories and essays as well as his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, "Angle of Repose". Stegner’s West is about aridity, settlement, exploration, land use. We will discuss those topics and more—specifically the conflicted critical response to "Angle of Repose".
