Course Description:

Allston James has learned almost as much about playwriting from David Mamet as he has from William Shakespeare, whom Mamet himself cites as a guiding light. One of America's most influential dramatists, David Mamet has written across a wide spectrum of themes and genres. He is best known for "Glengarry Glen Ross," winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984. Mamet's plays and films are notable for pushing dialogue’s boundaries. Through interviews, selected scenes from his works, a viewing of "The Spanish Prisoner," and Allston's own perspectives as a dramatist, we will examine the inner workings of Mamet’s consequential style and plotting. With a cast that includes Ben Gazzara, Steve Martin and Ricky Jay, "The Spanish Prisoner" is a taut and twisty thriller.
