Course Description:

Contemporary art can be challenging and beautiful, provocative and disturbing. This course presents a new look at the controversial period between 1960 and 2000 when art and its traditional forms were called into question. Our focus will be on the relationship between American and European art, while challenging previously held views about the origins of some of the most innovative ideas of this time. Major artists such as Cindy Sherman, Faith Ringgold, El Anatsui, Hung Liu, Richard Serra, and Zaha Hadid will be discussed. Important trends including Pop Art, Minimalism, Conceptualism, and Postmodernism will also be examined.
