Course Description:

Born in Poland to a Jewish journalist father and a Catholic mother who fought with the Polish Resistance, Agnieszka Holland has quietly captured and captivated an international audience of cinéphiles for nearly half a century with her politically engaged and emotionally resonant film director, Holland stands out for her singular ability to meld documentary realism with powerful narratives featuring unforgettable characters whose lives are often defined and determined by the tidal waves of great historical change.

Participants are to independently view each film prior to the Zoom session. A syllabus will be provided with streaming options well in advance of the course.

Karen Davis is Senior Film Programmer for the Mill Valley Film Festival. She is Professor Emerita at CSUMB and has taught courses in world cinema and cultural studies at CSUMB, UC Santa Cruz, St. Mary's College, and Vassar College.
