Course Description:

One of the few female film directors to rise to international acclaim in the 20th century, Agnès Varda’s career encompassed an uncompromising body of work that spanned across all genres, often embodying multiple genres within the same film, from political documentary, to dramatic fiction, wry comedy, and even homage to the Hollywood musical. The Belgian-born, Parisian-by-choice Varda was an innovator from her first frames to her last, and never shied away from addressing challenging, sometimes controversial topics in her formidable body of work. We will sample four films from the oeuvre of this inimitable director, focusing on her “middle period,” between 1977 and 1991.

Films include: "One Sings, the Other Doesn’t" (1977), "Jane B. par Agnès V." (1987), "Le Petit Amour" (1988), and "Jacquot de Nantes" (1991). Participants are to independently view each film prior to the Zoom session.
