Course Description:

As Butch Cassidy said about the posse following him and Sundance, “Who are those guys?” Who were the men who founded the United States? How did this disparate group come together to create a new government unlike any before? Some were slaveholders, some were anti-slavery. Some were highly educated, while others had little education. They often had different ideas of government. Some wanted a broad democracy and others favored a government of the elite. We tend to think of the Founding Fathers as men who shared a common vision of the united country, but such was not the case. The nation they created was a product of compromises that no one had foreseen. But what ideas, what visions did they share that guided their thinking? We’ll look at these men and their ideas that created a new kind of nation.
