Course Description:

Sufism, the phenomenon of mysticism within Islam, has many similarities with other spiritual traditions such as Buddhism, Taoism and mystical facets of Christianity and Judaism. There are practicing Sufis around the world who are not Muslims, as well as many people who have benefited from its teachings and, as such, Sufism has a universal dimension. After reviewing the tenets of mainstream Islam and discussing how Sufism fits in, we will examine the roots of Sufism and its main principles and practices. We will also listen to Sufi music and read works by Sufi poets in order to understand Sufism as a lived experience.
