Course Description:

"The Waves" reputes to be Woolf's most difficult book. It is her last novel and her most lyrical one. She called it a "prose-play," yet it reads more like poetry. The story is told through six sets of soliloquies; the six people have gathered at the ocean to memorialize their friend, Percival, who has died. "The Waves" depicts the isolated inner thoughts and feelings of each mourner while weaving them together into a song of friendship among the six. They are both alone and together, and the ocean's waves provide a rhythmic background that reminds all humanity of our powerful, persistent, repetitive, yet unique, nature. The book is formidable, but, together, we will unpack its beauty and share a profound reading experience.
