Course Description:

This course was inspired by the current exhibition of nocturne paintings at the Monterey Museum of Art. Nighttime, that intangible, paradoxical time of every day in our lives, has fired the imagination of artists as diverse as Whistler, Munch, Klee, Hopper, Tanner, Giotto, and Rembrandt as well as our Central Coast Tonalists. We associate many kinds of feelings with darkness—peace, loneliness, intimacy, calm, privacy, anxiety, fright. Whether you associate darkness with the (often elusive) state of sleeping, with the spookiness of imagined dangers, or with the quiet escape from hectic daytimes, join us for this painted nocturnal journey. (Our second class will meet at the Monterey Museum of Art for a guided tour of the exhibition.)
