Course Description:

Our exploration of global crime fiction continues with two classic novels from Sweden. "The Laughing Policeman" by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö was published in 1968 and is routinely featured on lists of “best all-time mysteries.” "Faceless Killers" by Henning Mankell introduced police inspector Kurt Wallander in 1991 and helped trigger a worldwide interest in Scandinavian Noir. Join us as we immerse ourselves in characters and narratives shaped by distinctly Swedish sensibilities. We will also explore ways that each uses (or varies from) traditional crime fiction tropes and discuss why Nordic mysteries, often dark and brooding, have been embraced by readers.
