Course Description:

Amy Cooter will draw from her book, "Nostalgia, Nationalism, and the US Militia Movement" to discuss militia members' ideology, motivations and potential threats after the 2024 election. Data for the book include nearly 20 years of research, including in-depth interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, and previously unseen archival materials from militia founder Norm Olson to detail the modern movement’s origin and trajectory through the attempted insurrection of Jan. 6 and beyond. The book analyzes how nostalgia and settler colonialism are crucial for understanding how militia members think about themselves, their country, and their actions.
