Course Description:In "The Great Gatsby," the hero appears as a master of reinvention, a poor boy who came out of nowhere to chase the American dream. F. Scott Fitzgerald could have been describing Charles Stoneham, who chased his own American dream and assumed a life of opulence and extravagant pleasure in the process. Out of a working-class background, he would reinvent himself as a shrewd, cutthroat Wall Street stockbroker and he profited spectacularly. With that wealth, often generated through murky business practices, he bought the New York Giants baseball team in 1919, arguably ©Julia Nelson-Gal, Meine Werke America’s premier sports franchise at the time. His 16 turbulent years as owner of the Giants included three World Series championships, and famous battles with his partners. |
