Course Description:

Aug. 27: Buddhism and Shintoism in Early Japan

We'll begin with Buddhism's colorful and often contradictory early history in Japan. Eventually, Buddhist teachings were folded into existing indigenous practices and beliefs. The history of "syncretism" between Shintoism and Buddhism informs not only spiritual practice but also the architecture and art of Japan. When Buddhism eventually began to spread to Japanese commoners, it evolved from an "institutional" and centralized system to a flourishing of multiple and often competing schools. Our exploration of these two religions will provide revealing insight into everyday life in ancient Japan.

Sept. 5: Marauding Monks and Political Priests

The various "new schools" of Buddhism were often dominated by influential figures like Dōgen, Kūkai, Shingon, and Nichiren who all offered differing methods through which everyday people could attain enlightenment. Everyone from business-savvy Zen monks to pious warriors spread Buddhism to all classes of society. This second session will help students understand the adage that in Japan one is born Shinto, marries Christian, and dies Buddhist.
