Course Description:

"I think therefore I am." So concludes the intrepid inquirer of Rene Descartes' "Meditations on First Philosophy" (1641) as he begins his journey through doubt and skepticism to discover knowledge of himself, the mind, God, rationality, and the essence of the material world. Proposed as a new foundation for religion and the sciences amidst the tumult of seventeenth century thought, Descartes succeeded in inaugurating modern philosophy itself. "Meditations" is about the art of thinking and a must-read for anyone devoted to the life of the mind. In the relaxed atmosphere of a two-day salon, we will follow generations of students who were introduced to the basic concepts of philosophy through patient consideration of this classic work.
